The American magician and illusionist David Copperfield was born this day in 1956. Although as far as we know he is still very much alive and well, he seems to have disappeared from our screens of late: ‘Back in the day’ he pulled off some amazing televised illusions such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China. Anyway the anniversary of his birth, naturally leads us to consider his namesake, the hero of one of Charles Dickens’s best loved novels. This in turn reminds us that February 2012 will see the 200^th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth. During 2012 there are, of course, a few other anniversaries (such as the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic) and events (the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics), but the Dickens bi-centennial will doubtless be celebrated in many ways. (They are working on putting up a statute, even though he said he did not want one!). Doubtless the anniversary will also be reflected in some special Victorian dress-up and school book-day events. In yesterday’s blog on Batman costumes and superheroes, we entirely forgot to mention that April 5^th was also the day when actress Bette Davis was born. Davis had a formidable screen presence and made many memorable films including ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’ (with Joan Crawford) and ‘Jezebel’, in which she emulates the titular biblical queen by flaunting herself and convention in American southern-states society. Whether one could class Davis as ‘action hero’ is debatable, but she certainly dominated the forceful female market of her time.

Our costume theme is Magic today, given that magicians old and new were born on this day (Houdini -1874, Paul Daniels – 1938). Here are some of our Magic costume suggestions…
